Arrived Xining (西寧) mid-morning and checked-in to our hotel. After lunch, we visited Kumbum Monastery (塔爾寺) about 30km south of the city. Flew out next morning back to Shenzhen via Xian and then bused back to Hong Kong.
Woke up with the train transversing the Nanshan Range (南山) in Qinghai, with lots of loops and horseshoe curves.
Going down a loop. We would go underneath the viaduct in a minute.
Two DF4D locomotives pulling our train since a switch at Golmud (格爾木) in the middle of the night.
On a siding is a military supply train heading to Lhasa.
Local transportation.
When completed, the new Guanjiao Tunnel (關角隧道) will be the longest rail tunnel in China, at 32.6km.
Buha River (布哈河), near where it flows into Qinghai Lake.
Qinghai Lake (青海湖), largest in China. Still pretty high at 3,205m/10,515ft.
