The morning was spent in Shigatse visiting Tashilhunpo Monastery (扎什倫布寺), another one of the six most important monasteries in the Gelugpa order of Tibetan Buddhism, and the seat of the Panchen Lama (班禅喇嘛), the #2 guy after Dalai.

We then departed towards the Everest Base Camp, with a late lunch break at Tingri (定日). We overnighted in a tent at about 5,050m/16,570ft. Highest place I'd ever spent a night.

View from our room at the Shandong Mansion.

Great view of the Tashilhunpo Monastery (扎什倫布寺) across the corridor.

The pavilion on left houses a 26m/85ft Maitreya, largest gilded statue in the world.

On right is the Dzong, a mini-Potala. Rebuilt after being destroyed in 1959. Not open.

It calls itself the tallest hotel in the highest city of the world. [Potosí, Bolivia may object.]

Don't think I've seen this jeweler in Hong Kong.

Entrance to the Tashilhunpo.

Unlike the 3 big monasteries around Lhasa, Tashilhunpo is pro-Beijing, and still has many monks.

An Eurasian hoopoe (戴勝).
