3. Crater Lake NP & Columbia River Gorge 2011-8-29/30
8/29: Left Klamath Falls and spent most of day at Crater Lake NP. Overnight in Bend.
8/30: Continue North to Columbia River Gorge and headed west to Portland.
Approaching Crater Lake from OR62 from the south. Remains of Mount Mazama.
Steel Visitor Center (6,450ft/1,966m).
First view of the Crater Lake at Rim Village (7,100ft/2,165m).
Lake formed when Mount Mazama erupted around 5680BC. Original height around 12,000ft/3,500m.
Average lake surface elevation: 6,173ft/1,882m.
View to the west after going clockwise around caldera.
Mount Scott (8,929ft/2,721m), highest point in park.
